The Nikon F3 was introduced in March 1980, and represented a major step forward for Nikon in the realm of electronic SLRs. Nikon took advantage of rapidly developing technologies, and introduced their first electronically-controlled shutter system. The F3 was also Nikon's first SLR to utilize a liquid crystal display to present exposure data. The camera was the first of many F-class cameras designed and styled by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and included one of its biggest legacies, the introduction of the signature red accent stripe on the handgrip—a distinctive design element that can still be found on today’s Nikon DSLR cameras.
