At the height of the space race between the United States and U.S.S.R., Nikon was commissioned by NASA to develop a 35mm camera that could meet the unique demands of shooting in outer space. Nikon heavily modified its seminal F camera to function at zero gravity, and provided it to NASA in 1971. The camera travelled with the astronauts onboard Apollo 15, which became the fourth manned mission to land on the moon.
